Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County canceled the in-venue aspect of their 2020 Bid on a Dream Dinner Auction and moved the event online as the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic sweeps the US.
The announcement came Thursday after Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb rolled-out a state-wide ban on all non-essential gatherings of more than 250 people.
The annual dinner auction, projected to raise over $240,000 for Nappanee’s Boys & Girls Club, was scheduled for tomorrow night, March 13, 2020, at Nelson's Banquet Hall, in Wakarusa.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County Chief Advancement Officer, Matthew Fischer, explained the decision earlier this evening,
While we are disappointed to cancel part of this much-loved annual event, Boys & Girls Clubs' top priority is always safety, not only for our Club members but for our whole community.
Matthew Fischer, CAO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County
Fischer said Boys & Girls Clubs will be calling event sponsors over the next few days to see if they would still like to give to the event and said the organization hopes to be able to reschedule the social part of the event for later this year.
Meanwhile, the event's auction has been moved fully-online with bidding on some items open now, and the remainder of the items coming online tonight. Support for the event has been opened to the public, and anyone can donate now until 5 pm on Sunday, March 15.
Fischer said he hopes opening the ability to donate to the event will help the Club cover some of the lost funds from canceling the event.
