- WHAT: "This Is Me" Quilt Mural Project
- WHEN: 3:15-4:30 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2021
- WHERE: Boys & Girls Clubs of Nappanee, 900 E. Centennial Street, Nappanee
- WHY: Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nappanee will be finishing work on colorful self-portraits under the guidance of long-time local artist Jeff Stillson. The completed pieces are part of a month-long project that will help build the "This Is Me" Quilt Mural.
BACKGROUND: The Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County, assisted by grant assistance from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, collaborated to develop this pilot project starting in 2021.
The project connects students in the Nappanee club with artistic expression as well as the popular Quilt Gardens and Quilt Murals.
Stillson, who has painted most of the 23 Quilt Murals on display throughout Elkhart County, has been the lead instructor in the This Is Me Quilt Mural classes, working alongside art instructors from the Boys & Girls Club.
“The kids are excited to see their hard work and creativity come to life,” Stillson said. “It’s our hope that we can expand this project to Boys & Girls Club students throughout Elkhart County to build something that reflects the vibrancy of our youth.”
The 16 self-portraits completed in this pilot will be assembled into a larger display and hopefully joined with future self-portraits.
In its 14th year, the Quilt Gardens and Quilt Murals along the Heritage Trail are a one-of-a-kind attraction that has won awards and recognition from the Indiana Tourism Association and American Bus Association.
There are 16 Quilt Gardens and 23 Quilt Murals in six Elkhart County cities and towns, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy the beauty of art in flowers and murals.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County began operations in 1956, and today the Clubs provide programming and services for the most at-risk boys and girls within the community. Each day, the Clubs provide powerful relationships with the youth they serve and open avenues of opportunity for young people across their community by offering safe places where young people can learn, grow and succeed.
The Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau is the official tourism advertising/marketing and public/community relations organization for the Elkhart County hospitality industry. The ECCVB advances quality-of-place initiatives in our downtowns and rural spaces, parks and natural environment, arts and culture, and events, festivals, groups and activities that help forge social connections.
